Pentium 4 all over again! Intel got too complaicent for years, they should have had a backup plan for 10nm failing.

A predictable scenario from 2017 when we had CFL-S release with just 12 threads, and to keep the 8700K under control at 5GHz it still needed decent cooling and delid. The 9900K further confirmed that even with an improved 14nm process and lower voltage required (in average) for 5GHz, things still ran very hot. And now we're at 20 threads. Surprising nobody, it's even hotter.

I would not be that critical. Those CPUs are running out of their comfort zone at that clock. Yes, they do not die, but they simply need excessive power. But compare all of them at 4GHz and they improved from generation to generation with better manufacturing process. Look at 3.6GHz which is right in the sweet spot and you can suddenly fit those chips with many cores into laptops. It is problem with marketing, they sell you chip that can do 5GHz on few cores and next thing which happens is that someone operates all cores at that clock or higher. Look back to 2nd generation (Sandy Bridge), back then intel sold you 3,1~3,4GHz base clock chips with boost up to 3,8GHz. Yet they already clocked to 4,8GHz with a bit of extra juice. It was not that bad, because those were just 4C/4T or 4C/8T chips. But their comfort zone was not at 4,5GHz or higher and it is not there even today.

Intel's news over the last months are just... Thankfully they have a different approach for the server market, where at least I think, heat is even worse than in desktop CPUs.

This new cpus are going to be a biatch to cool lol , i guess at minimum it will required an aio 360 to cool that Volcano of cpu , 80c~90c running those temps day in and out cannot be good for hardware. My i9 9980xe on a huge custom made water cooling set up at 1.30v~1.32v and 4600-4800Mhz can reach 102c within seconds on cbr15 😱 and start the throttle mambo jambo , hence it is attached to my water chiller 24/7 to tame the beast. they needed to drop this Arch 2 years ago as i do not think 14+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ can give any more performance and reach its limits long time ago.

No surprises here. The CPUs speeds are so high that of course they are going to run very hot, even my overclocked 7600K runs hot... So anyone considering those CPUs needs to add the price of a good cooler for them.

looks normal to me, my friend have one 3700x running at 80c on hyper 212 black edition and another one running a 3900x at 80c on coolermaster 280mm masterliquid pro too, another one running i9 9900kf at 85c on corsair 240mm too (cant remember exactly the model) so looks more or less the same

Strange. Guru3d's 3700x was running at 64 Celsius and 3900x at 68 Celsius under a prime test with a aio cooler (so probably in the 50-60 for normal use). My 1800x is running in the 50-60 while playing games with a simple Cryorig h5.

Which is pretty much what Guru3d reported 😉 Temp in the 60ies or even 70ies under prime is perfectly fine. When you get close to 90+ under load with a good cooler it's starting to be hot though anyway in my opinion. Those reports from unknown source are bs anyway. Never trusted them and never will.

Meh. My 3770K build has run at 95c under load for the last 5 years with liquid and still going strong. Remarkably.

Sure, Ek block are premium cooler, very better than my friends can buy, and guru3d always test on table without case and with air conditioning 😉

Comparing with what Intel needs to cool off their chips, this is a walk in the park. Remember that half joke that Intel needs a full fridge to cool off those X299 chips up to 22 cores? Like Core i9-10980XE with 165W Max TDP but going way , way higher than that and generating heat like a stove?
