Once firmware support finally comes out for X470 motherboards, I'm tempted to upgrade my 2700X to a 5900X. I wonder what the performance of Zen 3 processors on these older motherboards will be like though? If it turns out the X470 motherboards don't perform that well with Zen 3 CPUs, I think I'll wait until Zen 4 and upgrade everything at once.
Performance is the same on older chipsets.

Well.. Zen 4 looks good, as will RDNA 3: "AMD is expecting the next-gen RDNA 3 GPUs scheduled for 2021 to deliver 50% improved performance-per-watt over the new RX 6000 series"

It was just a jab at the other guy that acted as if x86 suddenly didn't matter - I was trying to say that tablets came with the same hype of "PCs are dead", only they didn't delivered that at all, and I think these new apple chips are getting the same kind of hype, so I remain skeptical. I actually agree with the rest of your post, although I still feel like Apple's "walled garden" and controlling approach is too aggressive, and will bite them in the behind sooner or later.

Thanks for the good read, I didn't catch that article. I may stand corrected and Apple might have done something incredible, but I still feel like we don't know enough to be sure. We'll just have to wait and see.

"Apple claims the M1 to be the fastest CPU in the world." From Anandtech. This is clearly nonsense. First, Apple says fastest "core", not fastest CPU. While the single threaded speed of M1 is very good, notice there are no multi-threaded benchmarks shown in that Anandtech article, as the M1 would get absolutely obliterated by Intel's and AMD's chips.

As a joke, when Zen 4 comes at 5nm Intel will still be at 14nm and still missing PCI-E 4.0 support 😛
Pretty sure Intel is preparing for 22nm in 2022 with that new TEC Cooler.

Pretty much this. Its going to be a very long time before people say "I can't wait to ditch this slow ass 64 core Ryzen 3 Threadripper workstation and get an Apple instead."

i only just got zen 3 may skip zen 4 and for prices of ddr5 ram to come down and to mature and just upgrade gpu only for the next gen once i got one this gen rx6800 iam thinking of getting
