I can't believe you're even nitpicking about this. The only true 4K monitor is one released recently by LG and it's 4096x2160. All the others referred to as 4K, including TVs, are 3840x2160. When there comes a time that monitors and TVs are released both in 4096 and 3840 flavors while being both marketed as 4K without using the UHD moniker THEN I'll join you in complaining about false marketing. Until then, you're just wasting your time and everyone else's. Every same topic, some joker comes in and does the same dance.

"4k" in the PC gaming community is generally talking about 3840x2160. There are variations of what you can get away with calling 4k, and we'll see what the actual standard ends up being (not that it matters). Just relax though, 4k being "falsely marketed" doesn't affect you in any way. If you don't like it, don't buy it. You don't need to make a crusade out of it.

You are right, that resolution is not 4K, it is UltraHD (UHD). Real 4K used in the cinema is slightly more than 4000 pixels wide (4096), and a slightly different aspect ratio. It is not 16:9. This all reminds me of the crap 720p they called HD before when it wasn't really, then added "Full HD" which could mean 1080i or 1080p. Yup, not confusing at all...

720p certainly is HD and should be called that. 1080 is "full HD" or HDX and 4k is just not necessary on a laptop. Maybe not on anything for that matter.

Is the 860M even capable of displaying at that resolution with any kind of decent framerates? I read that it can't run ultra settings in Crysis 3 or Battlefield 4 at 1080p. If not and the native resolution of the screen is 4K, even running at 1080 will look like crap.

1. It will not run Battlefield at 4k. In fact, there is not a single card out there, including the desktop ones, capable of running it at 4k and acceptable frame rate. If you set it to medium-high with disabled AA, it will look fine, and the framerates should be decent. Again, this is not a SLI/Crossfire gaming rig with 5GHz CPU. 2. If you play at 1080p, it will work just fine, and will look good. This is the "magic" of UHD screens. You get the nice and sharp text and graphics, but when you want to launch some games, you run them at 1080p when the card can't handle the load. Each pixel from the graphics card is mapped to 2x2 pixel square on the display, so there is no blur whatsoever. It just looks like a regular 1080p screen. I've checked that with both UHD (sometimes called 4k) 3840x2160 -> 1920x1080 and "3K" 2880x1620 -> 1440x810. There is no blur, everything looks ok, just the pixels are bigger.
