Western Digital Launches Next-Gen WD_Black Gaming Storage Portfolio
The WD_BLACK portfolio of storage solutions is seeing some exapansion. These include its first NVMe solid-state drive (SSD) with next-gen PCIe Gen 4 technology, a fully bootable Gen3 x8 add-in-card, and a Thunderbolt 3-powered NVMe SSD gaming dock, each offering eye-catching RGB lighting options.

Built with the WD_BLACK G2 controller and optimized for top-tier and high-intensive gaming (not intended for NAS or server environments), the WD_BLACK SN850 NVMe SSD will help gamers achieve supreme PC performance. It reduces game load times and transfers files faster than its predecessor while using brand new cache technology. $150 for 500GB. o.O
According to AT the 1 TB version of the SN850 is $230 and the 2 TB is $450.
With memory prices steadily falling and no meaningful performance improvement over SATA, let alone PCIe3 drives, this is pretty much exactly twice as much as I'm willing to pay.
OTOH WD is competing directly with Samsung here, when it comes to being detached from reality that is.

But on most motherboards won't you drop your other x16 slot to x8? If RTX IO is anything to go by this is not a great buy if you start dropping your PCIe v3 lanes on new graphics cards.
