Toshiba Unveils New 18 TB NAS Hard Disk Drives in the MN09 Series
Toshiba has added the MN09 to its NAS HDD line-up, which has a huge capacity of 18 TB. Demand for more storage capacity is growing because more and more data is being created.
"MN09" is the name of Toshiba's new line of hard drives for NAS that can hold up to 18TB of data. These hard drives use the CMR (conventional magnetic recording) method to store data. In this case, the number of platters is 9, and FC-MAMR technology, which increases the recording density of CMR, is used for the first time to make the company's HDD for the NAS. Helium, which is lighter than air, is used inside to keep heat from building up. When it comes to interface, it's SATA3.0 (6Gbps), and the speed is 7,200rpm. The buffer size can be up to 512MiB, and the maximum transfer speed is 268MiB/s. It can hold 180TB of data each year. Line up, then. The outside dimensions are 101.85 mm in width, 147.0 mm in depth, 26.1 mm in height, and 720 g. Samples have already been sent out.
Toshiba - People who work from home need fast access to data and the ability to archive and share data in private cloud environments. The 18 TB MN09 has more storage space and uses less power to meet the needs of storage customers. Helium has been used to keep nine disks in the MN09 drive. It uses Toshiba's new Flux Control Microwave-Assisted Magnetic Recording (FC-MAMR) technology. FC-MAMR increases the capacity of the CMR to 18 TB and increases the density of each platter over previous designs. The MN09 is the 3rd generation to use Toshiba's unique 9-disk helium-sealed design.
MAMR technology is one way to make hard drives store more data. In the last few years, HDDs with new MAMR heads have been able to write much faster with the Microwave Assisted Switching (MAS) effect. Toshiba will keep meeting the needs of the market and working to improve CMR and drive data densities with MAMR technology. MN09 is built to work around the clock and has a workload rating of 180 TB/year. The NAS 3.5-inch drive can fit up to eight drive bays.
The 7200RPM 18 TB NAS drive has a 512 MB buffer and can transfer data at a rate of 268 MiB/s for a long time. This makes it the best choice for home offices and small businesses. The MN09 18 TB is now on sale.

512 MiB buffer?
I rememebr when I was blown away by 32 MiB buffers in HDDs.
Hu ? My first harddisk had a whopping capacity of 20 Mib - yes you read right megabytes ... this was towards the end of the eighties when i spent all my hard earned cash on insanely expensive hardware for my beloved Amiga
as far i remember the harddisk alone was about $1K and the controller another extra $1k ( or a bit lower i think ). It was a Seagate ... or Conner ... not sure any longer

5 inch floppies! and then the smaller 3.5 inch I can remember sitting there slotting 10+ of these into a machine to load a program, hard drives lol you had it easy!
Weird though as you say initial HDD were 20mb and super expensive I too had one for my Amiga in the late 80s, now here we are 30 years later I have over 10tb on my PC and my phone has 256gb with a 1TB card as well, wonder where we will be in another 30 years

I think WD. Hate to see slowly entering the duopoly.
Before we had some real choices, now not so much.
All my NAS HDDs are Toshiba, fingers crossed, no complaints.
