Samsung ships 16GB registered DDR3 sticks

by Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 03/20/2009 11:17 AM | source: | 0 comment(s)
Samsung established a record today by becoming the first to ship 16GB registered DDR3 memory. The feat was accomplished by combining its recent 2-gigabit (512MB) memory chips and would let servers hold very large amounts of total memory. The 1,066Mbps of bandwidth alotted by the combined memory would let as much as 192GB of memory fit in a single computer with 12 memory slots.

The new technology is also simultaneously more efficient. The chipset uses 1.35 volts, or 20 percent less power than a 1.5-volt DDR3 stick; the 2-gigabit chips themselves use about 40 percent less power than a half as dense 1-gigabit chip.

Samsung hasn't provided pricing for the memory but does note that a less expensive, 8GB dual-inline RAM stick is also made possible for workstations and other, more conventional systems that use standard-length RAM slots.
