Samsung Electronics, a global leader in advanced memory technology, has announced the start of mass production for its 16-gigabit (Gb) DDR5 DRAM.

Utilizing cutting-edge 12 nanometer (nm)-class process technology, this achievement reaffirms Samsung's position at the forefront of the DRAM industry.

According to Jooyoung Lee, Executive Vice President of DRAM Product & Technology at Samsung Electronics, the company's 12 nm-class DDR5 DRAM sets itself apart with exceptional performance and power efficiency, thanks to its differentiated process technology. Samsung's latest DRAM not only meets the demands of the computing market with high-performance and high-capacity products for large-scale processing but also supports next-generation solutions that enhance productivity.

Compared to its predecessor, Samsung's new 12 nm-class DDR5 DRAM reduces power consumption by up to 23% and increases wafer productivity by up to 20%. This outstanding power efficiency makes it an ideal choice for global IT companies aiming to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions in their servers and data centers.

The development of Samsung's 12 nm-class process technology was made possible through the utilization of a new high-κ material, which enhances cell capacitance. This increased capacitance facilitates a significant electric potential difference in data signals, resulting in more accurate signal distinction. Moreover, Samsung's efforts to lower operating voltage and minimize noise have contributed to delivering an optimal solution that meets customer requirements.

Samsung's 12 nm-class DDR5 DRAM lineup boasts a maximum speed of 7.2 gigabits per second (Gbps), enabling rapid processing of two 30 GB UHD movies in approximately one second. As a result, this DRAM series will cater to a wide range of applications, including data centers, artificial intelligence, and next-generation computing.

In December of last year, Samsung successfully completed the evaluation of its 16-gigabit DDR5 DRAM for compatibility with AMD, and the company continues to collaborate with global IT firms to drive innovation in the next-generation DRAM market.
