Rumor Has it: Microsoft may takeover EA

Rumor Has it: Microsoft may takeover EA

A rumor on the web indicates that Microsoft might consider acquiring game publisher EA. Currently, this is unsubstantiated as there are no details available, but Microsoft is looking to do something with all that cashflow of theirs, including seeking exclusive games for the Xbox One.

The rumor originates from Polygon, who mentions the acquisition plans in an article covering the lack of exclusive games for the Xbox One. The site makes the claim based on a single source, which Polygon calls 'reliable' and 'close to Microsoft'. Microsoft would also consider Valve and PUBG. Microsoft has 130 billion dollars at hand to spend in available cash flow, the market value of EA is 35 billion dollars.

Some of the names being thrown around as possible acquisitions by Microsoft are, frankly, astounding, even unthinkable. But the fact that they are doing the rounds is instructive. The most recent one we heard (from a reliable source close to Microsoft) was, in fact, Electronic Arts. We also heard a whisper about Valve and about Korean outfit PUBG Corp., which Microsoft last year signed to a timed exclusive for its hit survival shooter, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.

SuperDataResearch analyst Joost Van Dreunen further told Polygon that he expects more news about an acquisition soon. "Because of where we are in the lifecycle of all these things, I’m expecting to hear Microsoft announce something very, very shortly".

Personally I don’t think Microsoft is going to acquire Electronic Arts, but this rumor is certainly attracting a lot of chatter today.

EA has butchered every franchise I personally loved, so for me, it can't get any worse. I hope they Buy them and stop EA's disgusting practices.

I would laugh so hard if that happens. UWP origin, more reason to ignore it :D

Btw @Hilbert Hagedoorn it's may, not make :D

This opens up so much space for new business ideas!

You want working windows updates? Buy a lootbox and see if you pick the Working Upgrade! (epic rarity).
You want an additional feature that once existed in windows but was killed by m$? Buy a lootbox and see if you can get it back! (legendary rarity)
You want to have a windows that is truely aimed at the PC and not half heartedly trying to construct an one-for-all OS that helps nobody?

BUY THE FUCKING LOOTBOX!

Lootboxes sold seperately. No guarantee for any win. No refunds applicable. Keep away from children.

This would actually make the company less scummy if they no longer have to appease the same stock holders. That and EA can't go any lower while actually making profit.

Lootboxes mostly contain cosmetic UI skins

I love random kind of Sh*t in Games. As long as it is based on in-game sources.
Best ever loot system was in original Firefall. Randomly spawned mineral zones, overlapping at places. Difficulty selected by player based on mining rig used. Random reward materials as result.
Material used highly affected scale and quality of crafted gear.

I never had so much fun in game made about mining and killing anything that tries to prevent you from fully filling storage in mining rig.
I used to be so OP there. Had so extreme regen I could just play opposition or run through "melt" zone.

Persistence and Luck, that was source of fun. When it is changed to Pay and Pray, you know that's recipe for frustration and disaster.
Games should be about Fun, not about frustration.

This very well could go sour if true

lets not forget what microsoft did to ensemble studios, rareware, ect

half expecting Origin Being folded into the microsoft store and every game from ea becoming UWP, to be a potential consequence.

What absolute nonsense. A deal such as this would take trillions of dollars to occur.

That doesn't seem to be a problem, article mentions MS having 130 billion to spend and that EA is valued at 35 billion so that wouldn't be a problem.
Article also mentions them looking into Valve and the PUBG developers though they already have a limited exclusivity deal with the PUBG devs and they probably can't outbid Tencent of China if they get interested cause they're, big. :D

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tencent
(Not sure if they'd pick up PUBG but PUBG is pretty big in China so that could lead to some competition.)

You got it wrong, dude. EA still gonna be EA. M$ just gonna make games require win10 to be playable.
And even probably put performance priority on self games and just trash others games.

It's not M$ fixing EA, it's M$ making more money with EA.
This is horrible, to be honest.

What absolute nonsense. A deal such as this would take trillions of dollars to occur.

Can they even afford them?

ah yes, I forgot M$ was a small indie company. Yeap, fake news.
