PowerColor RX 6700 XT card with thermal pad covers still on is discovered by the user.
The protective covers of PowerColor Radeon RX 6700 XT graphics card have a manufacturing problem thermal pads are still in place for an end-user. Whether this is isolated to one unit or batches is unknown. Whoops?
PowerColor RX 6700 XT graphics card disassembled by "angry kitten" on Reddit revealed protective coverings over secondary components such as memory chips and VRM. Before inserting the card, the user saw a blue protective layer and decided to remove it. Memory chips and MOSFETs that can reach temperatures of above 100°C
In all likelihood, the cooler was installed incorrectly by the assembly facility, rather than by an OEM that builds these coolers. At the end of the production line, these protective covers are to be removed. At this time, there is no indication that more products have had this issue as this is the only report of this incident.

The article dosn't say if failing to remove the liner affected the cooling or not. I wonder how much of a difference it actually makes. The cooling pads pictured aren't exactly robust to start with.

Given that plastic as a thermal conductivity of 0.5 W/mK2 at best, it's pretty much thermal insulator if one don't remove those stickers before assembly.

And at what temp does plastic melt? Seem pretty much unaffected by heat. So again I ask how much of a difference it really makes?

If it's every single card of a large batch, it's quite an RMA nightmare, but at least the problem can be easily fixed without needing to scrap the cards.
