Sony warned that the PlayStation 5 will continue to be in short supply until 2022, suggesting that the company will have limitations in its ability to drive sales targets for its latest game console.

During its financial results conference, they mentioned it had sold 7.8 million units of the console as of March 31 and aims to sell at least 14.8 million units this year. That would keep it on track to match the trajectory of the popular PlayStation 4, which has sold more than 115.9 million units to date. The PS5 has been hard to get ever since its launch (November), partly due to a shortage of components such as semiconductors, and the company has not given an official estimate of when it expects supply to normalize.

"I don't think demand will drop this year and even if we produce many more PlayStation 5 units next year, our supply could not keep up with demand," said CFO Hiroki Totoki.

Totoki told analysts that Sony needs to increase production as soon as possible and make sure there are consoles in stores. Demand will remain high regardless of the Covid-19 situation, the CFO assured an analyst who is suspicious of Sony's ability to fully capitalize on the rise in home entertainment triggered by emergency shutdowns due to COVID.
