Nvidia, which has exclusively utilized GDDR6X memory from Micron since 2020, is assessing changes in its memory supplier portfolio due to the introduction of GDDR7 technology.

Although Micron held a significant position in the market, Samsung's emergence with its GDDR7 components has drawn Nvidia's attention for potential use in the forthcoming GeForce RTX 50-series graphics products, according to BusinessKorea.

Samsung initiated the GDDR7 technology's introduction, dispatching sample chips to Nvidia for system validation in mid-July. Concurrently, SK hynix is progressing with its GDDR7 development, targeting completion within the year, as stated by BusinessKorea. Micron, on the other hand, plans to launch its GDDR7 in the first half of the following year.

Given the GDDR7 release schedules of these leading DRAM producers, Nvidia may consider both Samsung's and SK hynix's offerings for its upcoming GeForce RTX 50-series GPUs. An underlying objective for Nvidia is to stimulate competition amongst DRAM suppliers by diversifying GDDR IC variants in its GPUs, which may subsequently influence the pricing of GeForce graphics cards.

Currently, Micron remains the primary supplier of GDDR6X memory, which powers Nvidia's premier GeForce RTX 4080 and 4090-series GPUs. The transition towards GDDR7 technology by Samsung and SK hynix indicates a notable shift in the GDDR memory market dynamics. In contrast to the GeForce RTX 30 and RTX 40-series, Nvidia's future high-end GPUs might source GDDR memory from three different suppliers.
