By the end of 2024, notebook producers are forecasted to integrate PCIe Gen5 SSD technology into their products.

A preceding publication by ithome highlighted that Silicon introduced its PCIe 5.0 SSD controller, the SM2508, tailored for notebook computers, desktops, and workstations. This controller offers 8 NAND channels, with each channel having a potential speed of 3600 MT/s. This leads to sequential read and write speeds reaching 14GB/s and random read and write speeds of 2.5 million IOPS. Huirong underscored that the SM2508 taps into the PCIe Gen5 performance, all while keeping power consumption around 3.5W, positioning it as appropriate for diverse notebook computer uses.

Furthermore, Silicon Motion verified that the SM2508 is manufactured using the TSMC 6nm process technology. It incorporates a dual-core Cortex R8 processor that supports symmetric multiprocessing (SMP), which allows for balanced workload distribution across multi-core processors. The Cortex R8 processor implements pipelined out-of-order execution, promoting optimized resource allocation, improved execution efficiency, and minimized idle durations by allowing the processor to process commands based on ready resources without being delayed by preceding instructions.
