New Core i7-4960X

Over at Tom's Hardware they once again managed to leak benchmarks wahaaaay ahead of the release. This time they posted Core i7-4960X "Ivy Bridge-E," numbers. The to be announced LGA2011 processor is compared with processors like  i7-3970X, i7-4770K, i7-3770K, i7-2700K, FX-8350, and A10-5800K.

The Core i7-4960X isn't scheduled to be officially launched until the second half of 2013. Overall Ivy Bridge-E is merely 10% better than Sandy Bridge-E. Anyway, have a peek at the many benchmark results. Complete preview at the source.

Well, after the first i7's appeared, all the next benchmarks were kinda meh. There's no huge game-changing breakthrough, just small improvements.

You can see that 4xxx series compared to 3xxx have significantly improved power consumption, but for the gamers it's not something we drool about. It will matter for laptops, where you could install powerful CPU and still get good battery life. On the other hand my i7 2720QM powered lappy is doing fine in both terms of performance and battery life.

If someone is looking for max performance, has enough money, and has 2xxx series or older, 4xxx may be a good option. I'm on overclocked 920 and it's still doing well. The purchase doesn't seem to be justified in my case. Maybe if I was gaming or rendering more, or didn't know what to do with money...
