Microsoft will install Windows 11 on older PCs, but with a warning

Microsoft will install Windows 11 on older PCs, but with a warning

The Verge's noticed that when installing Windows 11 on a PC that does not meet the minimal requirements, a warning message appears, informing us that our PC does not support the operating system and would therefore not receive updates.

The company had already warned consumers about this a few weeks ago, and they are now warning them before they upgrade to Windows 11 in case they were not aware of the policy in place at the time.

The message says the following:

This PC does not meet the minimum requirements to run Windows 11 - These requirements serve to ensure a more reliable and higher quality experience. Installing Windows 11 on this PC is not recommended and could result in compatibility issues. If you proceed to install Windows 11, your PC will no longer have support and will not be able to receive updates either . Damage to your PC due to lack of compatibility is not covered by the manufacturer's warranty. By selecting "Accept", you acknowledge that you have read and understood this message.

In this manner, Microsoft will enable you to use Windows 11 even if your PC does not fulfill the criteria, but it will not address any potential issues or provide you with upgrades because they are not optimized for your hardware.

To run Windows 11, your computer must have at least two 1GHz cores, 64 GB of accessible storage, at least 4GB of RAM, and support for Secure Boot and TPM 2.0. Even if these prerequisites are met, Microsoft maintains a list of supported CPUs that excludes a large number of devices. According to this list, only Ryzen 2nd generation processors are supported. From generation to generation on the AMD side, and from generation to generation on the Intel side. The Ryzen 1st Generation and Intel Core 7th Generation processors will not be compatible, as will all previous variants.

To ensure compliance with these standards, Microsoft redesigned the Health Care app to determine whether our PC is compatible with Windows 11. The program was deleted shortly after its June introduction owing to a variety of issues, while it now appears to detect compatibility correctly and provides us with more information about which requirements are not met in the event that our system is incompatible.

Keep in mind that Windows 11 will be available starting October 5 as a free upgrade for Windows 10 computers that match the minimum requirements. It will be phased in, beginning with the most contemporary equipment and ending with the oldest.

Users of old hardware rejoice!

You can use your PC safe in the knowledge that the next time you turn it on, Microsoft wont have broken it.

Dumb. For those with old HW, why would anyone with half a mind choose to upgrade a fully functional OS to one that does not update? I am sure there will be a few that do, and presumably security updates will continue, just other updates wont.

I do feel like we just need a surge in WINE or Proton development, to the point that it's seamless running Windows software on Linux. At that point, we have backwards compatibility and can move forward with everything Linux based.
