As Windows 10's official support period nears its conclusion, Microsoft has stepped up its efforts to promote Windows 11. It has been reported that eligible PC users have begun to encounter full-screen ads promoting a free upgrade to the new operating system.

These ads have emerged for Windows 10 users after installing the May 2023 Cumulative Update. When users turn on their computers, they are greeted by these ads, urging them to download the most recent version of the operating system. If users try to bypass the update, additional windows appear, showcasing the benefits and enhancements of the latest OS, such as a more user-friendly interface, heightened security measures, and new productivity tools.

Microsoft's announcements also highlight performance improvements in gaming, navigation, and document search within Windows 11. Users who opt to stay with Windows 10 will receive a final reminder about the free upgrade to Windows 11 via the settings page.

Critics have taken issue with Microsoft's Windows 11 promotion strategy due to the lack of an option to disable the ads, raising concerns about potential recurrence in future updates. Users may also receive notifications for other Microsoft solutions, such as Microsoft 365. Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 10 version 22H2 will be the final release, with only security patches provided afterward. Official support will continue until October 14, 2025, after which the company will no longer be held accountable for any security vulnerabilities exploited by cybercriminals.
