Microsoft's job advertisement appears to validate rumors of a new company division creating its own processors and SoCs. For instance, the company is currently seeking a "Director of SoC Architecture," or a team leader responsible for developing the company's own SoCs.

The position is specifically for Microsoft's Surface division, which develops notebooks, tablets, and smartphone spin-offs. According to prior claims, Microsoft is focussing its SoC development efforts on server processors, but Surface variants are also a possibility. Meanwhile, these plans appear to have matured further.

Among other things, the job description for this position states:

Strategically develop and integrate IP (software/hardware) that enable meaningful experiences that are unique or significantly better. Working with a diverse team of business, engineering and product design experts, you will define a multi-year technology roadmap and identify emerging technologies to develop new product features and capabilities. You build internal and external partnerships to define and enable the SoC technology portfolio for future product generations.
