Micron has introduced the Crucial P5 Plus, a new generation of NVMe SSDs. The M.2 SSD series features read speeds of up to 6600MB/s, write speeds of up to 5GB/s, and capacities of 500GB, 1TB, or 2TB.

The new SSDs are built around Micron's proprietary 176-layer TLC-nand memory and its own controller, the brand says in an investor note, and should write up to 66% quicker and read 40% faster sequentially than the previous generation of Crucial SSDs. The latest SSDs have a reading speed of 6600MB/s and a writing capability of up to 5GB/s. Micron's previous generation of SSDs, the Crucial P5, reached read and write speeds of 3400MB/s and 3000MB/s, respectively.

The Crucial P5 Plus has been tested on Intel and AMD platforms and is also backwards compatible with PCs from the third generation that accept M.2 drives. SSDs reach read and write speeds of 3300MB/s and 2700MB/s, respectively, on these older PCs.

The 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB SSDs cost 110, 182, and 381 euros, respectively, and come with a three- to five-year warranty, depending on the total number of bytes put on the drives. The P5 Plus SSDs are equivalent in performance to the recently released Seagate FireCuda 530 series, which are built on the same Micron nand memory but utilize a Phision controller.
