The desktop CPU sector has experienced downward trends in recent years. The global pandemic and economic circumstances further impacted the segment, leading to significant losses for industry giants Intel and AMD.

However, the recent data from the second quarter of 2023 indicates a reversal in this trend. A study from Jon Peddie Research sheds light on the shifting dynamics, indicating that Intel expanded its market share by 23%, while AMD saw a decrease of 5.3%.

Intel's Raptor Lake processors, part of the Core Gen13 lineup, could be a factor in this growth. Furthermore, with Intel's Core Gen12 (Alder Lake) processors also available in the market, the surge in market share might be attributed to contributions from both generations.

The Jon Peddie Research study includes a graphical representation displaying CPU unit shipments during various periods of 2022 and 2023, with distinctions made between laptop and desktop processors. The graph showcases precise counts in millions of units. Specifically, in the second quarter of 2022, 70 million CPUs were dispatched, with 72% designated for laptops and the remaining 28% for desktop computers. By the first quarter of 2023, these numbers dropped to 46 million units—69% for laptops and 31% for desktops. Nevertheless, the second quarter of 2023 marked an upswing, recording 54 million units shipped, maintaining the prior distribution of 72% for laptops and 28% for desktops.

Concluding, the study implies that while both AMD and Intel foresee positive results for the third quarter, their projections remain measured and cautious.
