Despite the thermal limitations of the chip's 3D V-Cache technology, which has led AMD to disable manual overclocking on the chip, SkatterBencher was able to bypass AMD's 5 GHz ceiling and achieve a peak boost of 5.4 GHz on a single core and 4.85 GHz on all eight cores.

SkatterBencher, an experienced overclocker, recently shared a video showcasing his successful overclock of AMD's Ryzen 7 7800X3D processor.  To achieve this overclock, SkatterBencher employed a complex combination of external clock generators, Precision Boost Overdrive, and AMD's Curve Optimizer. Precision Boost Overdrive was utilized to prevent power limitations from occurring on the chip, while the external clock generator physically boosted clock speeds. The curve optimizer was used to overvolt the chip beyond stock voltages to keep clocks stable.

Despite the complexity of the overclocking strategy, the results were very effective, with a 7.7% boost to boost frequencies and a 10% boost to single-core clocks compared to stock frequencies. This overclock showcases the potential headroom available in some of these chips. However, only time will tell how quickly the 7800X3D will degrade with the overvolt applied.

With a clock speed of 5.4 GHz, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D offers the same compute performance as a standard Ryzen 7 7700X, with the added advantage of the L3 3DV-Cache, which significantly boosts gaming performance.
