A new graphics card from ASUS, specifically the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti Dual, is under the spotlight for its innovative inclusion of an M.2 SSD slot.

The Bilibili video from ASUS's general manager in China, Tony Yu, demonstrated the graphics card's unique architecture.

The design carves out space at the rear of the card to accommodate the M.2 SSD, such as a 2TB Samsung 980 Pro SSD. Here, the back plate of the GPU doubles as a heatsink for the storage device, repurposing the unutilized PCIe lanes of the graphics card. An observation reveals that many GPUs in the entry and middle range, like the Nvidia RTX 4060 series, occupy only eight out of the sixteen PCIe lanes. Consequently, eight lanes remain free. Given that M.2 SSDs typically require four lanes, a maximum of two SSD slots can theoretically be incorporated into the card's PCB.

The integration of the SSD into the graphics card simplifies the process of swapping drives in a computer, according to ASUS. However, this configuration can potentially lead to thermal concerns. To mitigate this issue, the GPU's PCB has been altered to let the graphics card's cooler also manage the SSD's cooling needs. Yu stated that this adjustment has led to a 10-degree Celsius drop in temperature.

Although the AD106 GPU employs eight PCIe lanes, the leftover eight lanes could, in theory, accommodate two SSDs. It is still unclear whether ASUS used a bridge chip for this purpose, with the former being the more likely due to cost considerations.

The incorporated NVMe drive in the GPU benefits from the graphics card's heatsink connection, which aids in effective cooling. For this setup to function properly, the SSD needs to be installed oppositely compared to its placement on a motherboard. Based on test results, the SSD maintains a modest temperature of 42 degrees Celsius, even under stressful testing conditions. While it remains uncertain whether this product will reach markets outside of China, its performance within its home country will be worth noting.

ASUS's tests have shown that the SSD's performance, when attached to the GPU, is similar to when it's connected to a Gen 4 motherboard.
