Apple announces iPhone 6 and Apple Watch

If you have been watching the livestream you will have noticed that Apple launches new iPhone 6 and larger iPhone 6 Plus handsets, and is expected to launch an iWatch device. New in the iPhone 6 is a gaming GPU allowing console like games. Apple just announced the Apple Watch (not iWatch). It will work seemless with the iPhone.

The new generation devices use an improved Retina screen which has Ion-strengthened glass and improved polariser, liquid crystal display and ultrathin backlight. The resolution is 1334x750(326ppi) for the iPhone 6, 1920x1080 (401ppi) for the iPhone 6 Plus.

The new iPhone is based on a 64-bit IC with 2 billion transistors (double the number in the iPhone 5s) and is up to 25 per cent faster CPU, up to 50 percent faster graphics performance. The device has increased battery life as well.

Included into the device is an M8 motion chip with built-in barometer These can be used in a new Health app to measure for example how many stairs you climb each day. Obviously this would be integrated into the Nike fitness app as well. The iPhone 6 will get an 8 Megapixel iSight camera with 'focus pixels' which can tell whether or not your picture is in focus.

Prices have just been announced. iPhone 6 comes in gold, silver and space grey and starts at $199, iPhone 6 Plus starts at $299 on a 2-year contract:

Apple just announced the Apple Watch (not iWatch). It will work seem-less with the iPhone. It works using a dial on the side which allows you to scroll through content without blocking the screen.

It's as much about technology as it is about style and taste, says Cook. Apple thought not just about function but the way it looks. Apple Watch will be available in two sizes and three distinct collections. You will see a selection of watch interfaces and straps including very classy (read expensive) metal straps

In a video from Jony Ive he talks about the dial which Apple names crown'. It can be used to scroll, zoom, and be pressed to return to the home screen. Smart replies and dictation let you respond quickly to messages. You can images or even your own heartbeat. The watch makes use of haptic feedback to inform you of events

Siri functionality has been integrated, so you talk to your watch and ask questions. It can for example search for local films available in a movie theater. The maps application has been integrated as well, you can zoom in out and rotate.

The Apple Watch can have customer notifications from social sites likes Facebook and Twitter to retweet or favourite from your wrist. For the US - A collaboration with Starwood hotels means you can unlock your hotel room door by waving your watch in front of a scanner. Okay that's just a little awkward eh ? :)

Apple Watch starts (yes starts) at 349 USD and works with iPhone 5s and 5c as well as iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. It will become available in 2015. And that concludes the event, with a closing mini concert on stage from U2.

Isn't that what all the phone manufacturers have been doing for the last two or three generations?

This is not a phone. It is a multimedia player with phone functionality. That is the only way Apple can skirt the FCC rule requiring standardized ports; mini usb.

So as far as phones/media devices, this just catches Apple up with Samsung. My old iPhone 5, which I used for about a year, only charged for about 30 minutes of talk and a single day of standby after that single year of use. You can't get much worse than that so any new battery is better.

I don't think the big announcement is going to be the iPhone, I think something else must be brewing because this is zzzz so far. It will probably be that new payment watch so we can battle a whole new method of fraud for decades to come.

The 6+ price is outrageous. $300 with a two year contract and only 16GB no SD card slot.
