A statement from Amazon on the recurrence of problems in specific GPUs while playing the recently released game New World has been released.  Amazon claims it's the graphics card manufacturer's fault.

This massive online multiplayer game had previously been postponed due to reports received during the testing period that the game was bricking graphics cards. After then, a patch was distributed, which should have resolved the issue problems still surfaced. The game was officially published on Tuesday, September 28th, and the first stories about it began to circulate shortly after.

"Over the past few days, we've received few reports from gamers who have had issues with their GeForce RTX cards. After a detailed investigation, we've been unable to find any unusual behavior on the part of New World that could be the cause of these issues. EVGA has already confirmed errors in the manufacture of some GeForce RTX cards. New World is safe to play. We recommend that players who have experienced a hardware failure contact the manufacturer."

A company that develops custom gaming computers, PowerGPU, has confirmed that they have only received complaints from clients who purchased older variants of EVGA's RTX 3090 and 3080 graphics cards, as well as a single 3080 Ti. In its admission, EVGA acknowledges that the first batch of 3090 cards had poor solder connections, which resulted in the failure of the cards not being traced to the game itself. A number of reports have also surfaced of Gigabyte RTX 3090 Eagle cards that have been bricked, and a Zotac model that has caught fire while playing the game, according to YouTuber JayzTwoCents.

It is likely that New World contains a specific piece of code that causes the card to consume more power than is safe, and that the hardware constraints are insufficient to prevent this from happening. Interestingly, this is similar of the problem that occurred with the introduction of the Ampere GPUs, where cards with insufficient mlcc capacitor capacity and too many sp capacitor capacities failed due to insufficient current filtering. This could be resolved by a driver update, which, to the best of our knowledge, has resolved all issues.
