Today we bring you a preview covering the Intel Core i7-3960X (Sandy Bridge-E) processor and X79 based motherboard. An update to the true high-end six-core processor series aimed at consumers. A processor based on 32nm technology that comes with most of the bells and whistles we have learned to like and love of the current Sandy Bridge processor generation.

AMD Radeon Gets Battlefield 3 Ready driver also

ATI Catalyst drivers 98 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Guru3D.com ImageHours after NVIDIA released its Battlefield 3 optimised GeForce driver suite, AMD also releases a similar driver of its own, the AMD Catalyst 11.10 Preview driver. We have an open discussion thread on these drivers right here.

Preview drivers are essentially BETA hotfix drivers. The new Catalyst software suite makes your ATI/AMD Radeon graphics card (that meets minimum/recommended requirements) optimized for Battlefield3. Its changelog follows:

  • Improves performance in Battlefield 3 Open Beta release for both non-Anti-Aliasing, and application enabled Anti-Aliasing cases on the AMD Radeon HD 6000 and AMD Radeon HD 5000 Series for single GPU configurations
  • Enables support for Eyefinity 5x1 display (portrait and landscape) configurations using the AMD Radeon HD 6000 and AMD Radeon HD 5000 Series
  • Vision Engine Control Center: User Interface enhancements have been implemented for the CrossfireX, GPU Overdrive, and Information Center pages.

AMD 2012 and 2013 Fusion roadmap leak

Processor 721 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

New details have been leaked about AMD's 2012 and 2013 Fusion roadmap. It shows that AMD likely has already shipped engineering samples of its Llano refresh "Trinity". Trinity prospect launch date is January 2012. Its chips will be branded E2s, A4s, A6s, or A8s. It will come with a graphics refresh ("London"/Northern Islands) and will swap the "Husky" cores for "Piledriver" cores -- "enhanced" versions of AMD's new 32 nm Bulldozer architecture.

Confusingly, Trinity's platform has yet two more code-name -- "Comal" for laptops and "Virgo" for desktops -- and the slides point to it being sold alongside Llano for Q1 2012, with Llano being phased out by Q2 2012. This may create some market confusion as both the new and the old chips will share the same A-Series branding.

ADATA S511 series 60GB SSD review

Review 567 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

ADATA added no less than four new SATA 3 (SATA 3 6Gs) SSDs in their S511 series lineup, in 60GB, 120GB, 240GB and even 480MB capacities, all SATA 3 of course.

The SSD drives come with that already prominent SandForce SF-2281 controller to deliver up to 550 MBps read and 500 MBps write speeds (when peaking). We take a look at the 60GB model.

AMD not savvy with GlobalFoundry yields

Processor 721 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Guru3D.com ImageEven though GlobalFoundries has shouted out time and time again that its 32nm silicon-on-insulator (SOI) fabrication process doesn't face any sort of problems, an AMD official recently refuted these claims as it stated that GloFo's advanced fabrication node isn't actually where it would need to be in terms of performance, reports softpedia.

"We have been pretty open in that we see room for improvement on the GlobalFoundries side, I think that is very much true," said Thomas Seifert, CFO and former interim CEO of AMD during the Deutsche Bank Technology Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada.

"Performance is not where it needs to be and we are driving them very hard to where we need them to be in order to continue to grow this partnership," concluded the company's rep.

Some of the problems with 32nm production face right now by GlobalFoundries are due to the manufacturing tools issues caused by the former management at AMD, but the foundry is also to blame as is facing a brain drain after losing five leaders of the Dresden Campus in a the span of just 18 months.

As a result of all these production issues, in early April, AMD has revised its deal with GlobalFoundries to go from wafer based pricing to a good chip approach. What this means is that AMD will only pay for the working chips manufactured by the foundry and not for all the wafers (containing working or non-working chips) that come out of production.

Seifert went on to explain that such an arrangement is only natural as their relationship with GlobalFoundries moves to a standard foundry relationship.

He also added that AMD has a similar deal in place with TSMC, which has worked out extremely well.

AMD is GlobalFoundries' largest customer and uses the foundry's production facilities to manufacture CPUs as well as the first generation of Fusion APUs.

NZXT Source 220 PC Case from NZXT

HTPC 228 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

NZXT reelased the so-called Source 220. "Source 220 is the perfect building block for gamers that don't plan to invest a lot on a case, but wish to maintain a high level of performance," said Johnny Hou, founder and chief designer at NZXT. "We were able to achieve optimal airflow at a price that won't break the bank."

The price in question is $54.99, more or less the same as 40.76 Euro, according to current exchange rates (the European price may be bigger when, and if, stores in that part of the world get the item).

It is a mid-tower of 195 x 450 x 495.5 mm, made primarily of steel but featuring a brushed aluminum finish, plus an all-black coating (in and out).

Micro-ATX and ATX mainboards can be placed inside it, the same way three exposed 5.25-inch ODD bays are present, as well as eight built-in 3.5-inch HDD bays.

NZXT decided to throw in the benefit of a tool-free mounting system as well, plus seven PCI slots and a front I/O panel (one USB 3.0, one USB 2.0, audio jacks). All in all, the newcomer is aimed at

Here's digital video of what we see inside our brains

Generic News 1994 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Check this out, the left clip is a segment of a Hollywood movie trailed that the subject viewed while in the magnet. The right clip shows the reconstruction of this segment from brain activity measured using fMRI. The procedure is as follows:

[1] Record brain activity while the subject watches several hours of movie trailers.
[2] Build dictionaries (regression model) to translate between the shapes, edges and motion in the movies and measured brain activity. A separate dictionary is constructed for each of several thousand points in the brain at which brain activity was measured.
[3] Record brain activity to a new set of movie trailers that will be used to test the quality of the dictionaries and reconstructions.
[4] Build a random library of ~18,000,000 seconds of video downloaded at random from YouTube (that have no overlap with the movies subjects saw in the magnet). Put each of these clips through the dictionaries to generate predictions of brain activity. Select the 100 clips whose predicted activity is most similar to the observed brain activity. Average those clips together. This is the reconstruction.

AMD FX 8150 close to Core i7-980X and Core i7 2600K ?

Processor 721 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

New slides from AMD leaked by way of Donim haber.

In a press deck of AMD FX Processor series leaked AMD claims huge performance leads over Intel. AMD claims its AMD FX 8150 processor is looking Intel's Core i7-980X in the eye in game tests, even edging past it in some DirectX 11 titles.

It is performing on par with the Core i7-2600K in several popular CPU benchmarks such as WinRAR 4, X.264 pass 2, Handbrake, 7Zip, POV Ray 3.7, ABBYY OCR, wPrime 32M, and Bibble 5.0. AMD FX 8150 is claimed to be genuinely benefiting from the FMA4 instruction set that Sandy Bridge lacks, in the OCL Performance Mandelbrot test, the FX 8150 outperforms the i7-2600K by as much as 70%. Lastly, the pricing of the FX 8150 is confirmed to be around the $250 mark. Given this, and the fact that the Core i7-2600K is priced about $70 higher.
