Timeline and Specifications of AMD Zen 5 Architecture CPUs

Reports from a Chinese tech news source indicate that AMD is planning to start the initial production of its next-generation CPUs, based on the Zen 5 architecture, with TSMC between April and June 2024. This will lead to mass production from July to September 2024. The upcoming Zen 5 desktop CPUs will feature "Nirvana" cores, whereas the server versions will utilize Zen 5c "Prometheus" cores.

TSMC, a semiconductor manufacturer, is expected to see an increase in orders from AMD in anticipation of the Zen 5 launch. These orders will span across desktop, laptop, and server segments, aiming to bolster AMD's role in AI hardware. TSMC has not provided specific details about its order book or client engagements, particularly for its sub-5nm processes. AMD's introduction of Zen 5, following the Zen 4, is geared towards boosting performance in both computing and graphics, marking AMD's foray into AI-accelerated computing. The Zen 5 chips, particularly for core computing, are to be produced by TSMC using the advanced 3nm process. This is part of AMD's broader strategy, which includes the MI300 series for high-performance computing, already in production using TSMC's 4nm and 5nm processes.

There has been some ambiguity regarding the manufacturing process for Zen 5 and 5c, with recent information pointing towards a 3nm process for both. This could potentially adjust the launch schedule for AMD's Ryzen 9000 series, which is rumoured to be based on Zen 5 architecture and was previously expected in the second quarter of the year.

The Ryzen 9000 series, linked with Zen 5, has been the subject of numerous leaks hinting at performance enhancements and design elements carried over from earlier generations. While detailed specifications are yet to be confirmed, AMD has stated that the Ryzen 9000 desktop CPUs will incorporate next-generation cores and be compatible with the AM5 socket and the existing 600 series motherboards.
