Sony PlayStation 5 Update Enables 8TB SSD Support and Dolby Atmos Audio

Sony has released a software update for the PlayStation 5, which incorporates support for M.2 SSDs of up to 8TB and integrates Dolby Atmos audio functionalities. 

Originally launched in a beta version, these features are now accessible to the general user base. Key features from this recent software enhancement, informed by feedback from beta testers, comprise:

Updated Accessibility Functions:

• Addition of support for a secondary DualSense controller intended for accessibility.

Augmented Audio Features:

• Activation of 3D Audio, utilizing Tempest 3D AudioTech, compatible with HDMI devices that support Dolby Atmos.

Enhanced Multiplayer Interactivity:

• Refined tools for user interaction and personalization in multiplayer settings.

Support for Increased SSD Capacities:

• The ability to use PCIe 4.0 SSDs up to 8TB, up from the former 4TB limit. For specific SSD compatibility, Sony's support pages detail suitable SSDs with minimum read speeds of 5.5GB/s.

This update is incorporated under the firmware version 23.03-08.00.00 for the PlayStation 5. With this integration, Dolby Atmos is now supported on Sony consoles, allowing for the Tempest 3D AudioTech to operate with HDMI devices equipped with Atmos audio, such as soundbars and TVs. To enable Dolby Atmos, users can navigate to the audio settings within the Audio Format segment. Additional attributes from Sony's beta update include the facility for a second controller for player assistance—utilizing two controllers as a singular input. Other additions encompass improvements to the Party interface, a preview image feature during screen sharing, and the choice to toggle the console's power notification beeps.
