Nvidia Volta going for 12nm?

First signs of the upcoming nVIDIA flagship GPU codenamed Volta already appeared a while ago with PCI device ID is 1D81 = Graphics Device [GV100], from the latest rumors Nvidia would be going 12nm with Volta.




Volta ladies and gents is a next-gen Nvidia series, perhaps still due for 2017 but not expected until maybe Q3/Q4?. Initially Volta was to be a 10nm part, however there have been numerous indications that Voltage would be done at 16nm FinFET. The latest rumor is a 12nm released.

Digitimes now reports that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has landed orders for high performance computing (HPC) chips for AI applications from Nvidia and Qualcomm, respectively, according to a Chinese-language Commercial Times report.

TSMC will fabricate Nvidia's next generation Volta GPU using a 12nm process, said the paper, which added that the Volta GPU will be paired with Nvidia's Xavier supercomputer chips for self-driving car applications.

High end Volta will get HBM2 memory and we know HBM2 is going to available anytime soon.
