De-lidded AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D Has Significant Thermal Improvements

The delidding procedure for AMD Ryzen 5000 processors is frequently regarded as superfluous, as these CPUs are already soldered to the heat spreaders, resulting in superior thermal conductivity. Others argue that, despite the risks, it is still worthwhile to try, if only to replace it with higher grade liquid metal and achieve a few degrees lower temperatures.



De-liding an AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D reduces thermals, according to Madness7771 on Twitter. Because to its 3D Vertical Cache (3DV Cache) chiplet design, the basic 5800X3D has higher CPU core temps than a standard 5800X. Heat is transferred from the CPU cores to the die-stack via structural silicon, where the STIM transfers heat to the IHS. In the second CCD slot of a de-lidded 5800X3D is an 8-core "Zen 3" 3DV chiplet (CCD) and a glob of structural material. Madness7771 used a Conductonaut TIM and a Noctua NH-D14 to cool the processor. Madness7771 provided processor temps before and after (using the same cooler). It drops from 80 to 70 and 78 to 67 degrees Celsius with a Forza Horizon 5 game effort. The peak temperature of the 5800X3D is no longer higher than 90 °C. De-lidding CPUs with STIM is a risky procedure that can destroy them.
