AMD is said to be working on an upscaling technique called Radeon Super Resolution. This would be built on existing FSR technology but would operate at the driver level, making it compatible with 'virtually all games'.
The technology will only function with games that enable exclusive full-screen mode, which does not sound like a major limitation.
RSR is based on the FSR 1.0 algorithm and will operate via the Radeon software driver, according to our information. As a result, the technique will address the primary drawback of proprietary super-resolution technologies, which is their requirement to be applied in a specific location in the graphics pipeline. This is typically necessary to avoid conflicts with user interfaces, which are typically rendered at native resolution. In other words, RSR will not require the support of game developers and will operate independently via a Radeon driver.
In January 2022, AMD Radeon Super Resolution will be available. The RDNA1 and RDNA2 architectures will support it (RX 5000 and newer). We currently have no information indicating that support for older GPUs or games with borderless fullscreen mode will be introduced in the future, but they may be. Additional details are expected to be revealed at CES 2022.
