Introduction

Powercolor Radeon RX 6650 XT Hellhound Spectral white

Today, we look at a PowerColor Radeon RX 6650 XT 8GB offering, the Hellhound in Spectral White. AMD has updated its rDNA 2 graphics card lineup with faster memory and a higher clock frequency. Is it worthwhile? AMD's rDNA 2 desktop graphics card line, the Radeon RX 6000 series, was released towards the end of 2020 and continued into 2021. The year 2022 is roughly halfway and AMD now revamps its RDNA 2 graphics card portfolio with a new family of graphics cards. All are rehashed and thus reconfigured products and that means this is not a new generation of cards, but rather an incremental improvement based on the same RDNA 2 architecture. The main difference here is the usage of quicker memory. All three graphics cards include up to 18Gbps GDDR6 memory chips, up from 16Gbps on non-50 versions. Some AIBs will configure the 6650 XT at 17.5 Gbps though with OC models configured at 18 GBps.  All graphics cards also use a comparable GPU seen from their predecessor but will arrive with increased memory and boost/game clock rates. As such the AMD Radeon RX 6950 XT will sit above the Radeon RX 6900 XT, and the Radeon RX 6750 XT will sit above the Radeon RX 6700 XT. of course the Radeon RX 6650 XT will sit above the Radeon RX 6600 XT. Consider this to be AMD's own 'SUPER' however without any big advancements as the shader and RT count remain identical. The lineup is intended to provide performance enhancements ranging from 5-to-10%, and memory will play a significant role in meeting these performance objectives. Once again, the new lineup would be as follows:

  • Radeon RX 6950 XT: 5120 SPs, 16GB GDDR6 (18Gbps), 256-bit bus, 335W TBP
  • Radeon RX 6900 XT: 5120 SPs, 16GB GDDR6 (16Gbps), 256-bit bus, 300W TBP
  • Radeon RX 6750 XT: 2560 SPs, 12GB GDDR6 (18Gbps), 192-bit bus, 250 TBP
  • Radeon RX 6700 XT: 2560 SPs, 12GB GDDR6 (16Gbps), 192-bit bus, 230W TBP
  • Radeon RX 6650 XT: 2048 SPs, 8GB GDDR6 (18Gbps), 128-bit bus, 180 TBP
  • Radeon RX 6600 XT: 2048 SPs, 8GB GDDR6 (16Gbps), 128-bit bus, 160W TBP

Hellhound Spectral white

In this particular review, we'll look at the PowerColor Radeon RX 6650 XT Hellhound Spectral White.. A product that maintains its benchmark performance in order to be a more valuable proposition. We already have the original HELLHOUND; the performance will be the same (same clocks), but the cosmetic design has been updated. Everything is white, including the shroud, fans, and even the backplate and PCB, and it looks stunning. Hellhounds' mythology indicates a hellhound is a supernatural dog in folklore. A wide variety of ominous or hellish supernatural dogs occur in mythologies around the world. Features that have been attributed to hellhounds include mangled black fur, glowing red eyes, super strength and speed, ghostly or phantom characteristics, and a foul odor. Certain European legends state that if someone stares into a hellhound's eyes three times or more, that person will surely die. In cultures that associate the afterlife with fire, hellhounds may have fire-based abilities and appearance. Well, a name that has been chosen wisely? Next to the Hellhound series TUL (the company behind PowerColor) will likely offer versions like the Liquid Devil, Red Devil, and Red Dragon products. Hellhound looks a bit different with a white scheme as and white LEDs. The product has a backplate that features the logo of the new series. And despite the reference clocks, the card reveals an 8-pin power connectors and three DisplayPort 1.4a, and a single HDMI 2.1. It is based on a dual-fan cooler and a 2.5-slot design. The modified RX 6650 XT graphics card has an outspoken design with a backplate. The fans emit white lights (white one color only), you'll spot a switch at the top side, a dual BIOS with performance and silent mode. In the I/O area, the card includes three DisplayPort 1.4 ports, one HDMI 2.1. Clock frequencies are reference, so is the power distribution, and the 8GB GDDR6 memory clocks in at 2250 MHz (18 Gbps effective). The card has a length of close to 22cm. Anyway, before we get into the review, let's start with some images and a short architectural overview.
