Windows can now automatically protects you from unwanted applications.

Windows can now automatically protects you from unwanted applications.

Microsoft announced in a blog post that Windows 10 now includes a capability that may automatically ban undesirable applications. It applies to both installed and downloaded applications.

That implies you may not require a virus scan after download or installation, though it never hurts. It is part of the Windows 10 May 2020 Update, which began rolling out to the public earlier this month. So the feature may already be installed. You can also check for missing software components:

  • Antimalware Client Version: 4.18.2003.8
  • Engine version: 1.1.16900.4
  • Antivirus version: 1.1311.560.0
  • Antispyware Version: 1.311.560.0

You can find it by going to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security > App & Browser Manager > Reputation Protection Settings . In that location is a feature called " Potentially unwanted app blocker", with an on button below it and two automatically checked boxes for blocking apps and downloads.

You will be alerted if an unwanted app is discovered on your machine.

Windows can now automatically protects you from unwanted applications.

Would be cool if they provided a list (with reasons for blocking).

It would be even cooler, if they wouldnt just automagically install and enable this "feature", but make it possible for the user to install and/or enable it with informed consent. I mean, they could jsut as well add a systemwide adblocker than...
These whole TPM for W11, automagic program blockers, defaulting to edge again etc. makes it really easy to say goodbye ms, hello linux for everything. Especially nowadays when due to Steam/SteamOS so many games run on linux either natively or with great emulation. Which should get even better once the steam deck is released later this year.

What the antispyware says about the windows telemetry? does it do a bit of self criticism at least? Or about the unwanted tons of stuff you find on a new windows install?

The one change I just noticed today was the settings page now having a new bar at the top telling me I was singed in as a local account and that it recommended me to sign in for "rewards"... whatever that means.. and that it now shows how long ago windows checked for updates, and then a "Restore recommended" for the web browser which I'm assuming is Microsoft's attempt at making more people use Edge.

Um, if it's been there since 2020 it's not a new feature. What am I missing?
