Samsung closes in on 5nm production in 2020

Samsung closes in on 5nm production in 2020

Samsung is currently producing chips on a 7nm euv process, which is used, among other things, for a few current Exynos chips in the Galaxy S10 series. However the Samsung Foundry is one step closer to mass production of an even smaller production process, 5LPE (5nm low-power early).

Much like the previous fabrication process, euv technique will be applied.. Reportedly, Samsung has certified all tools from partners to initiate the production process for 5nm chips. That would mean that we would see the first 5nm chips in the first half of 2020. Samsung's own upcoming Galaxy S11 smartphone is a possible candidate for an Exynos chip baked on the new and smaller production process.

"With the introduction of its EUV process node, Samsung has led a quiet revolution in the semiconductor industry," said Charlie Bae, executive vice president of Foundry Sales and Marketing at Samsung Electronics.

"This fundamental shift in how wafers are manufactured gives our customers the opportunity to significantly improve their products' time to market with superior throughput, reduced layers, and better yields. We're confident that 7LPP will be an optimal choice not only for mobile and HPC, but also for a wide range of cutting-edge applications."

Mean while Intel continues on with 14nm.

14nm has served Intel well but everyone is sick now of 14nm refreshes.

Hopefully by 2020 we'll see Intel's 10nm. ^^

Will be interesting to learn if this will be the manufacture node for the Zen 3 + refresh.

the nm races is interesting

https://semiwiki.com/semiconductor-manufacturers/intel/7544-7nm-5nm-and-3nm-logic-current-and-projected-processes/
"At the 7nm (foundry)/10nm (Intel) all four companies have similar process density."
"Going forward Intel’s 7nm process appears to line up as denser than foundry 5nm and even appears to match up favorably to foundry 3nm processes."

so 2020 will that 7nm intel save the company ? ... going to be another interesting year in semiconductor

Duh. They are fast at it. I wonder about consoles aimed at end of 2020.
Depending on clock and size of chips used, what would be better? 7LPP or 5LPE?
If target clock is lower, then maybe 5LPE.

As for AMD vs nVidia desktop GPUs. nVidia has Wattage to spare therefore can go for process that delivers higher clock. AMD will likely aim at process that delivers higher power efficiency. Which will by design make nVidia's GPUs cheaper to fabricate while delivering comparable performance.

AMD still has the power efficiency ball and has to play it. Till they do, they'll suffer from it. Seeing OC on 5700XT, therefore clock that manufacturing process can achieve, power efficiency is key to extra performance.
