Microsoft Ends Mainstream Support for the somewhat failed Windows 8.1

Microsoft halted supporting Windows 8.1 this week, the OS will continue to remain in an ‘extended support’ for a few years state though, which will be prolonged towards 2023.

By halting mainstream support Microsoft simply will not introduces new features for the OS. In Windows 8.1’s extended support phase, that will last 5 years, Microsoft will offer security updates for the operating system, the company advises on its Windows Lifecycle Page. Microsoft always offers 5 years of mainstream support and 10 years of extended support after the initial release of a Windows version.

Back in the year 2015 Microsoft halted mainstream support for Windows 7, the OS will remain in extended support till January 2020. Windows 10 will continue to receive mainstream support till October 2020 and extended support till October 2025

They do. They end support for older Windows 10 builds. There won't be Windows 11 for years if ever.

The time gets extended everytime a new Windows 10 release appears, so as long as they keep making those twice a year, it will be a long time before its out of support.

They won't end support for W10 and it won't extend the W10's support time.

W10 is supported with latest public build, and it's logical: why spend money with a build if the correction is in latest build? (i know some prefer build 15**, but it's like that for general use build 17** is faster and correct a lot of issue).

It was already like that with previous Windows like even XP wich latest support were SP2 for X64 and SP3 for X86 version only.

Big deal. Their mainstream support doesn't amount to much these days anyway.
