Intel to halt Extreme Edition branding for its processors (updated and debunked)

Intel to halt Extreme Edition branding for its processors (updated and debunked)

Intel might be dropping the Extreme Edition branding for their processors. The news was posted by François Piednoël, an ex Intel employee who has worked there for 20 years working on architecture development of CPUs like Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge, Haswell, Broadwell, Skylake, and Kaby Lake.

So when François posts a tweet as shown below, we do feel it has merit to it. Intel currently is applying the Extreme edition branding to processors like the Core i9-7980XE but jumps way back into the past with procs like the Core i7-5960XE Extreme Edition and if we jump way back in time to 2009, the Core i7 975 Extreme Edition. We'll see what branding Intel comes up with. With the current trend has been something Silver, Gold, Platinum etc.

Update: we just received an email from Intel, denying the claim François made:

“There is no change to the branding of the Intel Core Extreme Edition processor and Intel Core X-series processor family.” – An Intel spokesperson

Could be to forestall potential embarrassment when lesser chips outperform the Extremes at lower cost. Something AMD has shown able to do lately.

But, but.....how are us l33t dudes gonna distinguish ourselves from the herd now? Am I going to have to lead with the price tag when people ask me what CPU I'm running?

Exactly my thinking now, maybe they're not as extreme any more. :D

That's what happens when you bump clock on lower end chips with each generation instead of actually improving IPC in way it makes sense.
Difference between regular and XE chips is not exactly extreme.
