Intel announces the Optane Memory M15 M.2 cache drives

Intel announced new Optane Memory caching SSDs at Computex. The update from M10, Optane Memory M15, has four PCI Express (PCIe) lanes, two more than its predecessor, which means that it's capable of greater throughput bandwidth.

The new the Intel Optane Memory M15 drives will not become available in larger volumes sizes. SO that's 16, 32, or 64GB 20nm 3D XPoint flash packing devices. Optane Memory M15 provides the following uplifts compared to the M10 devices. The M15 has an 365 terabytes written (TBW) endurance rating and a five-year warranty, and it supports all of the existing software Intel already has for the M10 series.:

  • M15 Sequential Read: up to 2,000MB/s (M10 did up to 1,450MB/s),
  • M15 Sequential Write: up to 900MB/s (M10 did up to 640MB/s),
  • M15 Random Read (8GB) up to 450k (M10 did up to 250k),
  • M15 Random Write (8GB) up to 220k (M10 did up to 140k),

The new units will become available next month.

I have always thought phase-change memory was super cool. A 64 gig one of these would make a nice cache drive, for sure.

I still don't know if Optane is Universally compatible, or if it is only compatible with certain Intel chipsets.

Sadly, it is not, only intel and only some chipset.
Samsung was on a way to do an universal equivalent but it's been years that there is no news about it.

Intel optane 900p works great with my 1950x threadripper :)

This optane "cache" is not working as cache on Amd, but it does work as storage :)

When it's not on a compatible chipset, it just don't make the use of smart caching, but it still works as an SSD, and i'm really tempted to buy one even for my Z97 because of reliability, durability and much better speed on granular data which is the type of data gives the most impact on day to day usage.
