Wireless keys might have a range of maybe 4 meters before your car unlocks, but that doesn't mean the signal can't be boosted (relayed) and manipulated to open and start the car. Tip, you better store your key in a faraday cage like box if you normally keep it in your pocket.

I'm not sure how that helps with stealing cars.
It's one thing to boost the signal in order to unlock and start the car; but soon after you move the car further away from the key, the ignition will shut off since it can't find the key.
I assume they also managed to capture the signal and replicate it on a handheld device? Because that would be pretty neat.

We would be reading a humorous news article instead if they stole the car only to drive a few meters before having to give up. Since that wasn't suggested, yeah, I assume the car security was utterly compromised.

The car manufacturer should be the one to compensate for that theft 100%. Unless the buyer was told by the seller in no ambiguous terms that the car locking system is a total joke, and the buyer understood and agreed to it.
