ASUS Preps Radeon R9 Fury STRIX with DirectCU III Cooler ?

ASUS Preps Radeon R9 Fury STRIX with DirectCU III Cooler ?

AMD is to launch the regular air-cooled Fury series (without the X) soon and all of the sudden at a price-watch entry a ASUS Radeon R9 Fury STRIX with DirectCU III pops up.

The entry was found at a German German retailer called Computer PC Shop and is asking roughly 625€ (incl. VAT) for the product. The card would come with ASUS' DirectCU III triple-fan cooling and as to the details of the R9 Fury, these remain in the dark . AMD might lower the clocks, reduce the stream processor count, or even both.

Of course after the Fury X was released thing might be completely different in the sense that the card remains unlocked with full clocks, just the product on air-cooling. But it is an interesting find alright.

Fury X's margin over 980 isn't that huge, and it's losing to 980Ti, so I don't see how they could afford to cut anything much in the regular Fury, aside from a little of the MHz to keep it from frying. Especially if that price is for real. That's significantly more than 980, after all, yet if they cut a lot, the performance will be the same as 980's. If they made it nicely cheaper than 980, then I could see them possibly cutting some stuff. In the end, however, I reckon the card must be a viable choice for those who don't want X's water cooling.

The mini versions of the 970 all have revised coolers, iirc. Here's the Asus DCU http://www.kitguru.net/components/graphic-cards/zardon/asus-geforce-gtx-970-directcu-mini-4096mb/
