AMD Starts Sampling 4-core RYZEN processors & RYZEN Launch Date

AMD Starts Sampling 4-core RYZEN processors & RYZEN Launch Date

The guys over at the French based Canard PC certainly have been a root for information lately when it comes to AMD Ryzen procs. After the initial benchmark and specs info they released they now claim that AMD is sampling 4-core Ryzen parts to partners.

Apparently these 4-core RYZEN processor would get a 65W TDP. AMD is launching however with the 8-core part, likely late February. The new 4-core parts however would address the lower spectrum of the channel and fight Intel Core i5 and i3 processors. From what we heard the 4-core parts will get a 65 Watt TDP, however knowing AMD there might be a 45W version with lower clocks (say 2.8 GHz)  as well for the more energy friendly work environment platforms. CanardPC claims that AMD began sampling Ryzen 4C B-Step production models with Hyper-Threading off. There however will be both HT enabled and disabled parts to match what Intel is offering. Hopefully all unlocked (multipliers) as well, but that remains to be seen in the lower binned and clocked spectrum of processors for differentiation reasons.

We have interesting times ahead of us with a whole lot of new generation motherboards and processors inbound. We're interested to see if AMD also will be releasing 6-core parts, which would make sense with badly yielded Summit Ridge parts.

The four core parts obviously will be compatible with Socket AM4 and the respective motherboards series that AMD, or better, their motherboard partners are going to fab. AMD is to release X370, B350 and A320 chipsets that are compatible with the upcoming RYZEN based processors (previously named ZEN).

The release date

So a bit of info on the release date then. In a public announcement from the game Developers Conference, they make mention of a "recently-launched AMD Ryzen CPU". And that is why we think AMD will launch the processors end of February, as the GDC starts 27th of February.

BTW AMD now quickly changed that line towards "for an introduction to the AMD Ryzen CPU":

Unconfirmed, but it would make no sense to do just one.

So I totally expect a HT version in the high-end range much like the i7 series and then a non-HT version in a comparable i5 range.

interesting times are ahead of us :)
and it would make sense to release 4 cores CPUs to compete with core i5 & i7
would be fun toe see AMD 4c/8t competing with i7 7xxx :nerd:
with half the cost of an Intel offering (wishful thinking maybe)
boxing match like old days anyone :nerd:

It will more go against the i7 6xxx as it's somewhat comparable to Broadwell, if it goes anything like the benches we've seen of their octacore so far, or am I wrong?

Prices are unlikely to be low. They will most likely be priced at around the same for the same performance as Intel's. 8c/16t will likely be around 1000€.
