AMD releases official statement on not using PIB cooler warranty

AMD releases official statement on not using PIB cooler warranty

A few days ago we addressed a possible oddity on AMD processors versus warranty, basically when not using the stock cooler you'd lose warranty. You can read our full story here. AMD just issued a statement on that to clarify a thing or two.

AMD is pleased to provide clarity on the warranty support for processors used with third-party heatsinks. Please see the updated terms located here and updated FAQ here.

The statement was intended to cover situations where, if the failure is deemed to be as a result of the use of an alternate thermal solution, that would invalidate the warranty. We’ve updated to make the language more accurately represent that.

Here's the new and updated entry:

Is the warranty for my AMD Processor-in-a-Box (PIB) still valid if I use a different heatsink/fan (HSF) other than the one provided in the PIB?

Yes, provided that the selected HSF, when properly installed and used, supports operation of the AMD processor in conformance with AMD’s publicly available specifications. Use of HSF solutions determined by AMD as incapable of such performance or which are determined to have contributed to the failure of the processor shall invalidate the warranty.

AMD for the MOST part -- as INTEL does -- DEALS PRIMARILY with PREBUILTS. Yeah, us CUSTOM BUILDERS are QUICK to forget THAT FACT. If the MAJORITY of their market consisted SOLELY of custom builders, OBVIOUSLY -- OBVIOUSLY -- they would NOT have stated such.

wow Shaxuul, that's a contender for most annoying post of the year.

AMD confirms what any sane person would believe their intent was with that clause, unfortunately it was probably written by a lawyer who doesn't even know what a cpu cooler looks like.
