AMD GPU marketshare declining again
The latest GPU marketshare report from Jon Peddie Research indicates Intel and NVIDIA gained marketshare in Q3 2010 at the expense of AMD. Compared to the quarter before, Intel gained 2.2 percent to 55.6 percent and NVIDIA's marketshare rose 0.5 percent to 21.2 percent, while AMD's marketshare declined 2.7 percent to 22.3 percent.
The report also mentions that GPU sales were down 1 percent sequentially due to reduced notebook sales, which could be blamed on Apple's iPad, as the company sold 8 million of them. However, compared to the same period the year before, Q3 2010 GPU shipments are up 10 percent.
JPR says AMD has attributed its market share decline to "weakened demand and OEMs letting their GPU inventory run down to avoid being stuck with leftover processors." Some of AMD's customers switched to Nvidia products "due to real and perceived shortages in supply," the research firm adds.
Vendor | Q3 2009 | Q2 2010 | Q3 2010 |
AMD | 20.1% | 25.0% | 22.3% |
Intel | 53.6% | 53.4% | 55.6% |
Nvidia | 25.3% | 20.7% | 21.2% |
And then a Marcury reports the following, we received the following from AMD:
Mercury Research has made Q3 2010 graphics market share information available, and for the second consecutive quarter AMD is the market share leader in discrete graphics. In addition, we made further inroads in notebook discrete, capturing an additional 5.6 share points and surpassing 60% share in notebook discrete. This is a tremendous undertaking and demonstrates the strength of the DirectX 11 notebook discrete graphics product stack, enabling AMD to outpace our competitor yet again in this key market
