Windows 10 runs on 1.3 billion devices
And one fifth still uses Windows 7. During its quarterly earnings broadcast it was mentioned that Windows 10 is used monthly on 1.3 billion devices. The milestone of 1.5 billion is slowly approaching.
Microsoft had hoped reaching one billion devices by the summer of 2018, this goal was only met two years later. The recent growth can be attributed in large part to increased demand for PCs in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. In its earnings report for the last quarter, Microsoft reported a 10% increase in Windows OEM revenue , which means that its partners sold more equipment. Similarly, Surface revenue was up 12%, according to the company's report.
Another factor driving the adoption of Windows 10 is the fact that Windows 7 is only supported for businesses that pay for extended security updates, which are not cheap at all. To stay safe, more and more companies are forced to upgrade to the newest version of the operating system.
Microsoft also mentioned that its collaboration platform Microsoft Teams already has more than 145 million daily active users, Microsoft 365 for home users already has more than 50 million subscribers and that the content and services revenue of the Xbox division grew by 34% .

You do admit that the telemetry was simple back then so I don't see why you're questioning it. Microsoft also still allows you to download free apps on their store without linking it to a mail account. And people have more sensitive information on their phones today than you think. Today people even have various bank/payment apps on their phones (which isn't great either since even Google doesn't guarantee more than three years of updates). And oh I forgot, facebook users complaining about Windows 10 is also a sight.
Google has made Android so reliant on their apps that the average joe won't bother trying to get by without their Play Store. The theoretical possibility is there but in practice it's a chore. You do know this.
Android is open source but only the enthusiasts care/bother with getting a custom ROM. And the only anti-telemetry ROM I have seen promoted when trying to be up to date is E, so I doubt the average joe knows of them. A possible risk here too that one can face if not checking beforehand, and I had happen for my father's phone, is that their phone might not have a custom ROM.
And ultimately, if you really wanted to feel safe with open source, you'd need to be qualified to check the code yourself.
Using an Android phone without the Play Store is actually quite simple and not a chore at all. However, people are either to lazy to bother or simply do not care to install a different store front and therefore, carry their tracking device everywhere they go.
Edit: And I use NO social media, at all and also do not use Windows 10 on my personal computers, anymore, except for one. (And that one is strictly for gaming only and only the games that do not play in Linux.) Objective local privacy and security matters, period, regardless of what others do.

Its important to note that most people don't use 10 because they like it, they use 10 because they are forced to and have no choice.
