Windows 10 runs on 1.3 billion devices

Windows 10 runs on 1.3 billion devices

And one fifth still uses Windows 7. During its quarterly earnings broadcast it was mentioned that Windows 10 is used monthly on 1.3 billion devices. The milestone of 1.5 billion is slowly approaching.

Microsoft had hoped reaching one billion devices by the summer of 2018, this goal was only met two years later. The recent growth can be attributed in large part to increased demand for PCs in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. In its earnings report for the last quarter, Microsoft reported a 10% increase in Windows OEM revenue , which means that its partners sold more equipment. Similarly, Surface revenue was up 12%, according to the company's report.

Another factor driving the adoption of Windows 10 is the fact that Windows 7 is only supported for businesses that pay for extended security updates, which are not cheap at all. To stay safe, more and more companies are forced to upgrade to the newest version of the operating system.

Microsoft also mentioned that its collaboration platform Microsoft Teams already has more than 145 million daily active users, Microsoft 365 for home users already has more than 50 million subscribers and that the content and services revenue of the Xbox division grew by 34% .

Nobody was forced to move from Windows XP to Windows 7 on the other hand as they were both equally capable,

no they weren't.

Count in everyone that is using Ryzen and was forced to move to Windows 10 because of the instability of Windows 7. I was literally force to start using Windows 10. I hate it, of course. Windwows 7 is the best OS from Microsoft. It is a shame that the instability issues were never addressed.

I've used Windows 7 across 2 Ryzen CPUs and haven't had an issue with stability at all.
A 2600x and a 3600XT. (Although took a bit more effort for the XT).
In fact, sad as this may be. This Windows 7 install actually originates from around 12/2010 with that old ancient beast the i7-950. I haven't had any issues that weren't solveable when migrating the OS across 3 generations of CPU hardware. 5 generations of GPUs, migrations to multiple different hard drives, two sound cards (both installed currently even with different purposes),etc.

I have a second drive set up for Windows 10 for when I need to use that as well. (For the number of games that use things that Windows 7 is not compatible with. Mafia 1 remake,DX12 as meh as it is,Special K)
A lot of things about W10 still irritate me a lot. (Thankfully OpenShell helps with some).
But we could be here for eternity talking about all of that nonsense...aside from stuff like Full Screen Optimizations that you can't truly disable and with some games disabling it doesn't even work. Or not being able to disable desktop compositing...Or the whole "Windows is a service", or every damn update causing some kind of problem for games. (Meanwhile i've had no major issues with my Windows 7 install that weren't hardware related for 11 years now? )or...or...or..

I'll be uh riding this 3600XT for a long time I think. That or it will get to the point that when I need to upgrade that badly i'll have to build a new PC and migrate my W10 drive to that and keep the 50lb behemoth (In this awfully overbuilt case) in the Fractal R2XL around just for the older stuff.

You're a bit naive if you think older versions of Windows aren't collecting your data too. If you use Windows, you better just get used to it.

Kind of funny because telemetry is one of the few things about Windows that doesn't bother me. People have so much paranoia over being watched, but did you ever stop ask what exactly it is you think you feel the need to protect?

If anything, I was actually surprised that Microsoft took so long with their telemetry. Apple and Google had pushed it for years with their mobile devices and it became accepted, then suddenly hell froze over when Microsoft deemed it was time.

Ideally I'd like telemetry to be gone in everything but it sure feels like Google and Apple can do whatever they please whereas Microsoft gets slaundered when they do the same.

What do you mean took so long? MS has done telemetry since Windows XP. It was relatively simple back then but it was being done. The reason why so many people are fed up with MS is because PCs tend to carry more sensitive information, and, because you can't really hide from it. With Google, it's typically as simple as just don't use their services. Android is open-source so if you really care enough, you can use a derivative that has the telemetry removed. Apple gets less flak because they're basically anti-competitor's telemetry, meanwhile Apple's fans shill so hard that it would be an honor to them if Apple collected their info.
