VR Industry Leaders Come Together to Create New Association
Samsung Electronics announced today it was participating in the launch of the Global Virtual Reality Association (GVRA), a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the growth of the global virtual reality (VR) industry.
Samsung is joined by Acer Starbreeze, Google, HTC VIVE, Facebook’s Oculus, and Sony Interactive Entertainment in the formation of this organization, which together will develop and share best practices for the industry, and foster dialogue between public and private stakeholders around the world.
The goal of the Global Virtual Reality Association is to promote the responsible development and adoption of VR globally. The association’s members will develop and share best practices, conduct research, and bring the international VR community together as the technology progresses. The group will be a resource for consumers, policymakers, and industries interested in VR.
VR has the potential to be the next great computing platform, improve sectors ranging from education to healthcare, and contribute significantly to the global economy in the coming years. Through research, international engagement, and the development of best practices, the founding companies of the Global Virtual Reality Association hope to unlock and maximize VR’s potential and ensure those gains are shared around the world as widely as possible.

I really hope they aren't going to do something stupid and create yet another "standard" for VR. If this is strictly to help promote the proliferation of VR then I'd say this association sounds great. But, if they're basically competing with Khronos then this is just going to make things worse.

I think this is an uphill battle similar to how the television manufacturers tried to jam 3D down everyone's throat a decade ago.
The problem: No one wants to put things on their head if they don't have to. People get eye surgery to stop wearing glasses. People don't want things on their heads.
Also, how do you share the experience with other people in the room when they don't have a headset?
Maybe the dream is to one day have everyone wearing a headset? This way, everything people claim on social media becomes the reality?

You make a very valid and interesting point. Even when it came to the 3D TVs that didn't need glasses, they were limited to where you sat and/or gave people headaches.
I'd say VR is a bit different than 3D movies, though. It's true that you can't share the experience, but, it's kind of supposed to be an isolated experience since it is unique to the user. Unlike 3D movies, you get a complete 360 view of everything, and you can interact with things. Unless we do retinal implants, it's physically impossible to do any sort of virtual or augmented reality experience without a headset in the comfort of anyone's home. You could have a nice blank white room with projectors facing each wall for the 360 view that anyone can share, but that's not exactly comfortable or practical for home use.
I'd suggest people check out the Youtube channel okreylos. He does a lot of cool things with augmented reality without the need of wearing a headset. Check out his virtual sandbox, as a good example.

I'm afraid that this group will slow the VR progress down actually. That instead of releasing very competitive models quickly they'll take their time coming up with a "slightly better product each year", while they could make leaps.

Awesome. Looks like those VR glasses might become a reality sooner than I thought.
