Unlocked Kaby Lake Core i3-7350K Pending?
For a few days now there is world that Intel might release a Kaby lake model processor in the Core i3 series with an unlocked multiplier, a K model .
The specific overclockable Core i3 model will be the Core i3-7350K (2C/2T). The Intel Core i3-7350K would run with a maximum boost frequency of 4.2GHz out of the box. This unlocked multiplier 'K' chip will be a dual-core part with four threads (2C/4T). It has a L3 cache of 4MBand 91W TDP:
Process node: | 14nm Plus |
Number of cores: | 2 |
Number of threads: | 4 |
Base clock speed: | 4.0GHz |
Max clock speed: | 4.2GHz |
L3 cache: | 4MB |
Max power draw: | 91 watts |
Parent socket: | LGA 1151 |
Price: | $180 |
This processor would be based on the latest 14nm “Plus” process node, which builds upon 14nm FinFET process technology that shrinks processor components down to an small size using fin-shaped transistors. The “Plus” version provides better processor performance and improved power efficiency over the older manufacturing process. Intel did this once before with a Pentium G3258 processor (Haswell) which kcoked ass (our review here).
There are the other two “K” models in the upcoming lineup:
Core i7-7700K | Core i5-7600K | |
Process node: | 14nm Plus | 14nm Plus |
Number of cores: | 4 | 4 |
Number of threads: | 8 | 4 |
Base clock speed: | 4.2GHz | 3.8GHz |
Max clock speed: | 4.5GHz | 4.2GHz |
L3 cache: | 8MB | 6MB |
Max power draw: | 91 watts | 91 watts |
Parent socket: | LGA 1151 | LGA 1151 |
Price: | $350 | $240 |
All three will serve as Intel’s fastest chip in each of the three upcoming seventh-generation i3/i5/i7 processor categories. So far, Intel appears ready to include two additional, “locked” chips in the Core i7 family, six models in the i5 family, and four models in the i3 family. The seventh-generation lineup will also consist of five Pentium-branded models with two cores and an overall maximum base speed of 3.7GHz.

Can't say I understand its position in the market with a price like that.

$180 seems to be a little high in my opinion.130-140.

I know Intel is dumb with pricing, but I honestly don't think they're dumb enough to have something so much worse for such a minor price decrease.
This, to my knowledge, is the first overclockable Intel dual core since Core2. To my recollection, many world record overclocks involved dual cores, even when 4+ core options were available. It's possible to get an i7 to reach 5GHz without liquid cooling. Imagine how much higher an i3 could possibly get.

So it will cost roughly 5-10$ less than the i5-7500, if they put that precise model again with skylake pricing (which I see no reason why they shouldn't). Then it would be a rather pointless product if it's in the price range of the i5, even though it will have an unlocked multiplier and 4 threads. The additional price you will have to pay for a Z motherboard and an aftermarket cooler will make it an even worse buy, going for a H motherboard with a locked i5 with stock cooling will be cheaper and perform probably as well if not better.
