TSMC starts development of 2nm process, 3nm already in the works

Blimey .. so small. At an investor meeting TSMC stated it has started developing a 2-nanometer manufacturing process, Digitimes reports. It appears to be the first 2nm process now officially under development.

Earlier on they already reported to be working on its 3nm process with a density of 250 million transistors per mm2 to be ready in 2022, the company now also confirmed that the development of its 2nm process.

Obviously, the process is still in the early stages of development, so there is not much news beyond its existence. The company is yet to make the transition to 5nm and then 3nm will follow, so there is still a long way to go to see this 2nm process, and we will have to wait longer to know the details.

Meanwhile, this year we will see an increase in products at 7nm+ and the first products at 5nm, a process that will have a much stronger presence next year with the arrival of chips from AMD and Nvidia. Then in 2022 we will see 5nm+ and the first products at 3nm, so we will see many changes and improvements in a very short time. Good times :-)

I wonder what will happen to the nomenclature once they start hitting sub 1nm?
