Toshiba released a new series of nvme ssds with their OCZ RC100 series. The SSDs are equipped with Toshiba's latest  64-layer 3d-tlc nand-memory chips and are offered in 120GB, 240GB and 480GB.

The OCZ RC100 SSD is targeting at anyone who want to switch to NVMe, but was not yet able to get through because of the price. With the RC100 series, Toshiba positions itself at SATA level when it comes to pricing, but with a much higher performance than even high performance SATA SSDs (up to 1,600 MB/s). The SSDs should be available with European etailers by the end of the week.

A short overview:

  • Affordable NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD (price comparable to SATA SSDs – performance higher than high performance SATA SSDs)
  • PCIe x2 interface that uses a B+M connector so it fits in all M.2 motherboard socket instead of just the M socket while still offering better than SATA performance.
  • Very small form factor 2242 so it can easily fit in any system

While the performance advantages of first-generation NVMe drives are well known, this high performance has come at an equally high cost – until now.  By leveraging its state-of-the-art 64-layer, 3-bit-per-cell TLC (triple-level cell) BiCS FLASH™ technology and an in-house-developed controller, Toshiba Memory Corporation was able to fit an entire SSD within a single BGA package. The RC100 Series balances cost and performance and bridges the gap between SATA and enthusiast-grade NVMe SSDs. A compact design also enables the RC100 to fit onto an M.2 2242 (22x42mm) PCB, making it one of the smallest SSDs commercially available.

  • RC100-M22242-120G £ 45,63 / 49 EUR / 54 USD
  • RC100-M22242-240G £ 64,99 / 69 EUR / 74 USD
  • RC100-M22242-480G £ 122,50 / 129 EUR / 134 USD

In addition to affordability, RC100 SSDs are designed for efficiency, consuming approximately 70 percent of the active power draw of enthusiast NVMe drives and giving mobile users even longer battery life on the go.
