The Witcher 3 HairWorks on AMD GPUs With Normal Performance

The Witcher 3 HairWorks on AMD GPUs With Normal Performance

If you have an AMD graphics card and want to run The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt with HairWorks enabled, here's a nice tweak originating from our own forums.

It seems that the performance trade-off with HairWorks enabled takes a huge toll specifically on AMD cards. However by decreasing tessellation you can get to very normal numbers.

All you need to do is this:

  • Create a profile for witcher3.exe in your Catalyst Control Center
  • Set Tessellation Mode to “Override application settings”
  • Set the Maximum Tessellation Level to either 2x, 4x, 8x or 16x.

We would recommend against using 2x as it severely reduces quality and looks terrible. Here’s a comparison photo that lets you see the differences between 2x, 4x, 8x and 16x tessellation levels.  AMD users have a way of enjoying The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt with the Nvidia HairWorks feature enabled and actually getting better performance than GeForce users not using a Maxwell architecture Nvidia GPU. It seems a bit ironic but exciting nonetheless.

So... if this works, and to me x4 doesn't look that worse compared to x16 (at least on his head), and this workaround does indeed function, make it look good, and run smoothly with hairworks enabled...

are AMD users happy then?

Also, I'd be curious if this method could be used on other games that possibly 'cripple' AMD performance.

In the recent years , I have noticed that when Nvidia introduces a new GPU family , the old one starts to have problem with drives. This is making me consider the next GPU I buy.

but reducing the tesselation factor will effect the water tesselation aswell?

For be honest, i can imagine many Nvidia users will be happy too to use 16x or 32x tesselation on hairs / furs and gain 10% fps, instead of > than 64x and 8x AA who give absolutely no difference on visual quality with 16x tesselation level... at least got the choice on the game menu.

( there's still the tricks for AA on the *ini anyway for Nvidia users)
