Facebook has permanently banned Louis Barclay, the developer of the 'Unfollow Everything' browser extension, from using its services for the foreseeable future. In addition, he had to pledge that he will never again design a program that connects to Facebook's servers, writes Barclay on media outlet Slate.

People can empty their whole News Feed by unfollowing all of their friends, groups, and Pages through the use of Unfollow Everything. The plugin was created in order to encourage people to spend less time on the social networking site.

According to Barclay's letter, Facebook's legal team has informed him that he must cease his extension. "They threatened legal action against me and suspended my Facebook and Instagram accounts," he claims in his letter.

Unfollowing someone is not the same thing as unfriending them. It is only the news summary that remains blank when using the program. The user maintains his friendships with the people with whom he previously interacted. In other words, "it ensures that you can use Facebook without having to see the overview, or that you can better select who appears in it and who does not."

Since then, the Chrome browser extension has been removed from the Web Store's list of available extensions.
