Swedish gaming powerhouse buys makers of Tomb Raider and Avengers

Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montréal, and Square Enix Montréal have all agreed to be acquired by Embracer Group. According to the Swedish business, the transaction is approximately $300 million (more than 284 million euros).



Crystal Dynamics is the firm responsible for Marvel's Avengers video game. Eidos Montréal is recognized for its work on Thief 4, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, while Square Enix Montréal is known for its work on Hitman GO and Lara Croft GO, among other titles.

Embracer is also interested in acquiring a number of games, including Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief, and Legacy of Kain. The three studios' around 1,100 staff will also be taken over. The transaction is not yet completed. This is predicted to occur over the summer. Embracer has expanded dramatically in recent years, purchasing dozens of firms such as THQ Nordic, Saber Interactive, and Koch Media.

Embracer will employ almost 14,000 people when the new agreement is finalized, including 10,000 game creators. In addition, the firm owns 124 studios and has 230 games in production.
