Successor to Intel LGA 1200 will be LGA 1700, another processor socket for Desktop CPUs

Successor to Intel LGA 1200 will be LGA 1700, another processor socket for Desktop CPUs

A leak of the Momomo_US and Komachi_Ensaka accounts show that the successor of the LGA 1200 socket will be LGA 1700, and that would be the Alder Lake-S platform, which in addition to a new socket will bring a new rectangular format for the processors, which were normally square at least on the Intel side.

As Komachi revealed, Alder Lake-S processors will have dimensions of 45×37.5mm, while current processors such as the i9-9900K have dimensions of 42.5 × 42.5mm. This rectangular design and the rather massive number of pins are most likely due to a design change towards a multi-die design, housing two DIEs at 10nm to compete better with the AMD platform.

Alder Lake-S could arrive at the end of 2021 as the second generation at 10nm, before that we'll have Comet Lake-S as the last generation at 14nm and then Ice Lake-S as the first generation at 10nm for desktop, both compatible with LGA 1200.

A lot of new pins, I hope they also increase the 16 PCIe lane business. At least 20 like AMD has would be nice, since PCIe SSDs are ubiquitous now, 24 would be even better.

1200 → 1700, quote the jump. I wonder what happened to the other 500 in between?

Used for hardware mitigations?
