Steam Hardware Survey: Windows 7 and GeForce GTX 1060 Lead the Pack
As you might (or not) know, Steam collects a lot of statistical data from their users which they share openly. And that always paints a very interesting picture as to what is the most popular hardware and software used. The December and 2nd half 2017 results have been listed, and guess what the number one hardware is?
So, I understand that here at Guru3D most of us are the high-end and enthusiast PC gamers, often with more than 6-core processors while staring at their Radeon RX Vega or a GeForce GTX 1080. The truth of it all is that seen overall things in hardware are much more level and widespread.
In December the most used graphics card was a GeForce GTX 1060 with over 12% of the user base. 47% of the end-users still have 8GB of RAM, where I am sure that Guru3D users would be at 16GB. The most used display resolution still is 1920x1080 with get this ... 70% of steams users.
Processor wise 67% of the users have a quad-core proc and 55% is running Windows 7. Also, you can see that when you focus on Q4 of 2017, AMD has not been doing well. Nvidia holds 85% of the graphics card market, and for processors, 91% of the pie is for Intel. As you can see, that share has been on the decline for AMD.
Hopefully now AMD cpu's make a comeback.
And anyone know if this survey takes into account smt so when they say most people are using a quad core are alot of this really just dual cores with smt?
GTX1060@1080p all day long. A new display AND a gpu for that 1440p? I call it mad consumerism...
This is wrong look at region its all Chinese bots with 500 steam installs cheating in PubG.
The stats are not wrong... its just Chinese people are now also in the mix. It's a better worldwide representation of figures rather than mainly looking at just the western world.
These figures least in the gaming world, really do show how little AMD has sold on that front. They are keeping afloat on people using them for mining rather than gaming. once that bubble bursts if it bursts or last dies down AMD won't be doing so good again on the GPU front
Well it feels good to have an AMD cpu again!
I've found people like us on here are rare with good computers, the steam survey just further adds to that. Good to see that the most common GPU/CPU out perform any console! (Not that it takes much)
Well the more expensive the PC the rarer it is, think for the last couple of years the 60/70 models have been the most dominant GPU owned by people, makes me happy people spend their money wisely on the best bang for the buck... then again people are also using the intel HD 4000 then i worry again.
Hopefully now AMD cpu's make a comeback.

I think it only takes into account real physical cores, least on intel side. i don't know if that would be the same with ryzen since if does work a little differently. But quad cores being used the most would make the most sense. it also shows a big jump in 6 cores (8700k and 1600x) were big sellers so i don't think SMT does get taken into account, just the physical cores.

So true - go down the pub and ask who has a 8 core cpu with a £300 - £800 gpu! Probably get a bottle over the head for taking the piss
